Jutland Cattle: Origin, Characteristics, Uses, Photo

The Jutland cattle are a dual-purpose breed of cattle which are raised for both milk and meat production. They are a pretty rare breed of cattle from Denmark where they are used for both milk and meat.

First herdbook for the breed was published in 1881, and had a small dairy type and a larger beef type. Then these animals were small with an average weight of 350 kg. And the cows were producing about 800 to 1000 kg of milk per lactation.

But the breed was extensively crossed with Dutch Black and White cattle in the first half of the 20th century to boost their milk production. This crosses along with Dutch cattle were accepted into the herdbook by the 1949, and their name was changed to Danish Black and White Cattle.

The last purebred young bull was exhibited in 1955. The Jutland cattle breed has been reconstructed since 1987, by using unregistered stock from farms which had avoided crossing their animals with Dutch cattle.

There were 49 breeders with a total of 11 bulls and 121 cows in 2004. Danish government provide financial support to the breeders for keeping this breed. Read more information below.
