Middle White Pig: Origin, Characteristics, Uses

The Middle White pig is a rare breed of domestic pig which is native to the United Kingdom. It originated in Yorkshire about the same time as the Large White breed. It’s size is between the now-extinct Small White and the Large White pig. And it is named for it’s size.

The breed was actually and fully recognized as a breed in 1884. Instead of bacon or lard type pigs, the Middle White pig is known as a pork producer.

The breed is best known for it’s sharply upturned snub nose. It is usually very hardy animal and very good for outdoor grazing system.

Currently the breed is listed as endangered by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, though it’s numbers have rebounded somewhat. Read more information about the breed below.

Middle White Pig Characteristics

As the name suggests, the Middle White pig is a medium sized breed of pig. It has many characteristics same as the general characteristics of Large White pigs.

But the Large White pigs have much more dished face and they are lightly larger than the Medium White pig breed. It is pretty fast grower than it’s large relative.

The animals are mainly white colored and it has well balance and meaty body.

Special Notes

The Middle White pigs are pretty hardy animals. They are found scattered over England today. And generally bred straight in England and have not captured much of a share of the commercial pig market.

But today their popularity has declined greatly. They have been successfully incorporated into commercial pig farming business, when crossed with the Large White pigs.

The sows are excellent mothers and care for their babies very well. They are usually quiet in nature and have very good temperament.
