Helmet Pigeon: Origin, Characteristics, Uses

The Helmet pigeon is an old breed of domestic fancy pigeon which was developed over many years of selective breeding. Exact origins of this breed are unknown. But it was originated most likely in Persia.

It has been referenced since the 15th century and appear to have origins in Germany. With some people claiming that the breed has been in existence for over 500 years.

The breed has been well documented since the late 1700s. Although the original Helmet pigeons were actually a tumbling breed.

Modern varieties were refined in the later 20th century. The Helmets and other varieties of domesticated pigeons, all are descendants from the wild or feral rock pigeon.

It appears to have been identical in early days with the Nun pigeon, except the Nun and colored flights and a crest. The Helmet pigeon is named so from the colored cap on it’s head which resembles a helmet.

It is also known by some other names such as Helmet Crested Pigeon and German Helmet Pigeon.

Helmet Pigeon Appearance

Helmet pigeon is a small to medium sized bird with many different varieties. It has medium face, short face, crested and plain headed varieties. It has a white body and colored tail and head.

The wonderful contrast between the dark, short mini-hood on the head and the white body inspired the name ‘Helmet Pigeon‘. It has a small to medium sized body with somewhat cobby appearance.

It’s head is usually of medium size and has abroad frontal. The breed can be either crested or plain headed. Breast of these birds appears to be thrusting upward.

Neck of the Helmet pigeon is amplystout, medium in length and seems to be bluish in color. The tail is well proportioned and overall it gives an evenly balanced appearance.

Uses

The Helmet pigeon is mainly as an exhibition bird. It is good for ornamental purpose and also pretty good for raising as pets.
