The Veiltail goldfish is a very beautiful type of goldfish which is known for it’s extra-long, flowing double tail and high sail-like dorsal fin.

It is one of the most gorgeous of the goldfish varieties. But it is relatively rare. The modern variety was developed in Philadelphia in the late 1800s.

But actually were derived from the Japanese Wakin, which is an elongated double-tailed goldfish.

The current variety of this goldfish became known as the Philadelphia Veiltail Goldfish in the early 1900s.

This variety is also known as the Feather-dressed Long Finned Man-yu in Asia.

It is one of the hardest fancy goldfish to breed true to type, and it is very difficult to produce good quality specimens conforming to the standard in all respects.

Veiltail Goldfish Characteristics

The Veiltail goldfish are similar in appearance to the Fantail Goldfish. But they have a rounder body and extremely long, delicate-looking fins.

They have double tail/caudal fin and anal fins which are well separated. The dorsal fin of these fish is held erect, quite long and can grow to over 6 cm.

Diet

Like most other goldfish varieties, the Veiltail goldfish are omnivores. And they are feed on all kinds of food, and favor the veggies, fruit and frozen food.

Breeding

The male and female Veiltail goldfish are almost similar. But telling the males from the females is relatively easy during the breeding season.

The female will often appear slimmer than the male other than when gravid.

The swim bladders of the Veiltail goldfish are round in shape rather than elongated, mainly due to the body shape of these fish. This makes this goldfish more vulnerable to developing a loss of balance.
