The Austrian Black and Tan Hound is a breed of dog originating in Austria. It is also known by some other names and nicknames. It’s other names are Österreichische Glatthaarige, Bracke, Austrian Smooth-haired Hound, Brandlbracke and Doggenwuffen. And it’s common nickname is Bracke.
There is no known history of this breed until after the middle of the nineteenth century. This large sized breed was used for tracking wounded game (most commonly hare) in high altitudes.[1]
Austrian Black and Tan Hound Characteristics
The Austrian Black and Tan Hound is medium to large sized dog. Coloring in this breed is highly important, it must be black with small, clearly defined, light to dark fawn markings. Two fawn marks above the eyes must be present.
The coat of these dogs are smooth, dense and short. They have long tail, which is slightly bent and the ears are medium in length and lie flat with rounded tips.
Average body height of the mature dogs is between 20 and 22 inches at the withers for males, and between 19 and 21 inches for females. And average live body weight of the mature dogs is between 15 and 22 kg.
Temperament
The Austrian Black and Tan Hounds have a keen sense of smell. They are an elegant runner which are used in all sorts of game. They have a lovely voice, and they make great pet due to their good-natured personality.
The Austrian Black and Tan Hound is not a dog wanting to be in a city. A suitable home will be in rural area where the dog will have lots of space to run unrestricted by a leash. They generally love to work.
