The Blue Picardy Spaniel dog is a breed of Spaniel originating in France. It was developed around the start of the 20th Century, from the area around the mouth of the River Somme. It is also known as Épagneul Bleu de Picardie and it’s common nickname is Bleu Picard.
The Blue Picardy Spaniel dog breed is descended from Picardy Spaniels and English Setters, and is described as a quiet breed that requires much exercise due to it’s stamina.
The Blue Picardy Spaniel dog is especially good with children. Similar to the Picardy Spaniel, it has a distinctive colored coat. Recognized by only a handful of kennel associations, the breed is predominantly known in France and Canada.
In France, the Blue Picardy was recognized as a separate breed in 1938, and there are about a thousand puppies born in France each year.
The Blue Picardy Spaniel dog breed is recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club in 1 June 1995. It is recognized by the American Rare Breed Association, which uses the same standard as the Fédération Cynologique Internationale.[1]
Blue Picardy Spaniel Dog Characteristics
The Blue Picardy Spaniel dogs are are very beautiful and medium-sized dogs. Their coat is speckled grey black forming a bluish shade, with some black patches. The coat is flat or a little wavy with feathering on the ears, legs, underside and tail. It has long legs with some setter characteristics.
The Blue Picardy Spaniel dogs have a long broad nose and muzzle, with thick ears covered in silky hair that usually end around the tip of the muzzle. Their chest is of medium size that descends down to the same level as the elbows.
Both the forequarters and hindquarters of the Blue Picardy Spaniel dogs are well muscled. The tail typically does not extend beyond the hock and is normally straight.
As a medium-sized breed, average body height of the Blue Picardy Spaniel dog is between 22 and 24 inches at the withers. And their average live body weight is between 18 and 20 kg.
Temperament
The Blue Picardy Spaniel dog is a versatile hunting dog, which is used for it’s ability to locate and retrive game in harsh and adverse terrain and conditions. It is not specialized to any one type of terrain, and tends to score well in field trials.

The Blue Picardy Spaniel dogs have a medium-length, flat coat which requires regular brushing for keeping in good condition. It is generally a low maintenance dog, but brushing once or twice a week will be good. Bathe or dry shampoo when necessary.
Check and clean their ears carefully, especially when the dog has been out in rough or brushy terrain. Trim their hair on the bottom of the feet and clip the nails.
