The English Pouter pigeon is a breed of domestic fancy pigeon from United Kingdom. It was originated in England over many years of selective breeding.
It is a tall breed with an enlarged crop, and it’s distinctiveness was described by Charles Darwin in The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication.
The English Pouter pigeon and other varieties of domesticated pigeons, all are descendants from the wild or feral rock pigeon. According to William Bernhardt Tegetmeier, the breed was originated from cross breeding the old pigeon breeds the Dutch Cropper, Uploper and the Parisian Pouter.

English Pouter Pigeon Appearance
The English Pouter pigeon is a tall breed with an enlarged crop, and overall a large body. It carries itself magnificently, and is a free, graceful and dignified bird.
Head of these birds is somewhat dove shaped and small in proportion to their body size. Their waist is long, narrow and V-shaped, and also to be one third of the bird’s length.
Their legs are as long as possible with more length from the foot to the knee. They should not waddle while walking, but should carry themselves elegantly. Their legs are strong and high stepping.
Their neck is long, and they usually have a large and well inflated round globe sharply sprung form the waist.
Wings of the English Pouter pigeon are very close to it’s body, and are narrow and carried high. Basic color of these birds are black, blue, black check, blue check, dun, red, silver and yellow.

This pigeon is a fancy pigeon breed. It is mainly raised for show or exhibition purpose.
