The Galatz Roller pigeon (also called Galati Roller Pigeon) is a breed of domestic pigeon from Romania. It was originated from the Galati County of Romania.
The breed became very popular among the pigeon fanciers, because these pigeons perform air acrobatics when flying.
It became very popular in it’s native country and the rest of Europe, especially in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.
The air acrobatics that these birds perform are comparable to those of the Birmingham Roller and Oriental Roller pigeons. Read some more information about the Galatz Roller pigeon breed below.
Galatz Roller Pigeon Appearance
Galatz Roller pigeon is a small sized breed with compact body. It has a round breast, short neck and short legs.
Although it is a smaller bird, but it looks bigger than it actually is mainly because of it’s compact body. These birds are obviously smaller in size as compared to the Racing Homer pigeon.
They have medium-sized beak. The Galatz Roller pigeon comes in many different colors.
Common coloration of these birds are blue bar white-flight-ped, diluted blue bar white-flight-ped, black white-flight-ped, red white-flight-ped and yellow white-flight-ped.
The white color spread on the head and body of a pied Galatz Roller pigeon is irregular, but there are pigeon fanciers who prefer a white belly and a white throat.
And there are also plain-feathered variety, and their colors are black, blue bar, red, yellow and white.
For identifying the pigeons during their flight, these color variation in feathers helps the pigeon fanciers and the contest jury.
Usually their feathering is rich which help these birds withstand the low temperatures in winter. Average live body weight of the mature birds is around 300 grams. Photo and info from Wikipedia.
Uses
This pigeon is a flying breed. It is raised for flying purpose and also good for raising as pets.
Special Notes
The Galatz Roller pigeon is a very hardy and strong bird and excellent flyer. A very spectacular trait of this pigeon is also the fact that the males, besides normal cooing, open up their wings in a V-shape, spread their tail feathers and swallow a little air (but not as much as cropper pigeons) in order to either impress the hens or intimidate the other males.
These birds are prolific breeders and relatively easy to care. The parents mate again as soon as the squabs in the nest are over a week old. And after another week, the hens lay eggs again.
Along with flying, the breed is also pretty good for raising as pets. However, review full breed profile of this breed in the following chart.
