Jersey Wooly Rabbit: Origin, Characteristics, Uses

The Jersey Wooly rabbit is a breed of domestic rabbit known for it’s docile nature and gentle disposition. As their name implies, the Jersey Wooly rabbit came from New Jersey. Bonnie Seeley of High Bridge, New Jersey developed this breed during the 1970s.

She wanted to create a small, wooled rabbit breed that would be very good as pets with an easy to care coat. She created this breed by crossing the Netherland Dwarf rabbit and the French Angora rabbit.

The result of that cross was a petite rabbit with a wool coat. Early Jersey Wooly rabbits still maintained the oblong body shape of the French Angora, made smaller by the influence of the dwarfing gene.

Bonnie Seeley first introduced the Jersey Wooly rabbit at the 1984 American Rabbit Breeders Association Convention in Orlando, Florida. Later the breed was recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association in the year of 1988.

Although the breed was originally developed to produce a long haired pet rabbit with wool that was easy to care for.

But today, the Jersey Wooly rabbit has also been one of the most widely exhibited rabbits at local and national shows in the United States. Today it is one of the most popular pet rabbit around the world.
