The Tharparkar cattle is a breed of domestic cattle. It is a dual-purpose breed which is known for both of it’s milk production and draught potential. It is also known by some other names such as White Sindhi, Cutchi and Thari.
The Tharparkar cattle breed was originated from Tharparkar District in Sindh Province of Pakistan. And the breed has been named after the district in Sindh from which it originates. They are very hardy and well adapted to the extreme climatic conditions and feed scarcity of their home tract.[1]
Tharparkar Cattle Characteristics
The Tharparkar is medium-sized breed with a long tapering face. They have slightly convex forehead, medium sized horns that curve upward and outward.
Their ears are large and semi pendulous. They are generally light grey in coloration with the color depending on the fore and hindquarters in males.
A white stripe runs along the backbone. They have a well developed, firm hump, medium dewlap, deep barrel and strong legs. Their tail twitch is black. They have medium sized and strong udder.
Average live body weight of the bulls is between 400 and 500 kg. And average live body weight of the cows is between 300 and 380 kg.
Uses
The Tharparkar cattle are dual-purpose animals. They are used for both milk production and also for using as a draught animal.
Special Notes
The Tharparkar breed is named after the district in Sindh from which it originates. The Tharparkar district has large stretches of sand dunes.
And adequate grazing is only available for a few months after the monsoon rains in July to September. They are very well adapted to the extreme climatic conditions and feed scarcity of their home tract.
